Planning a group dinner in Granada: what to think about

Group dinners in a restaurant are either the best or the worst version of eating out, depending almost entirely on how well the kitchen and the group have communicated beforehand. This is a practical guide to making the former more likely.

The set menu question ¶

Most restaurants that offer private dining will propose a set menu for groups. This is not a cost-cutting measure. It is a practical necessity: a kitchen cooking for fourteen people cannot manage fourteen different orders at the same time without the service falling apart. A set menu allows the kitchen to time every course correctly and to give the group a coherent meal rather than a collection of individual plates.

At Fervores, the set menu for private bookings is built around what is in season at the time of the dinner. Gonzalo proposes a menu by email after the booking is confirmed, and the group can request changes. The price is from 45 EUR per person for three courses and a shared starter. Wine is chosen from the list and billed separately.

What to communicate before you book ¶

The most useful information to give a restaurant when booking a group dinner is: the exact number of people, any dietary restrictions, the occasion if there is one, and a rough sense of how long the group wants to be at the table. A birthday dinner for twelve people who want to stay until midnight is a different proposition from a work dinner for ten people who need to be done by 22:30.

Dietary restrictions are the most important. A kitchen can accommodate vegetarians, gluten-free guests, and most allergies if it knows in advance. Last-minute requests at the table are harder to handle well, especially when the kitchen is already running a set menu for the whole room.

The room itself ¶

The back room at Fervores seats up to fourteen at a single long table. It is not a sealed private room. A heavy curtain separates it from the main dining room, which means you can hear the ambient sound of the restaurant. Most groups find this preferable to the silence of a dedicated function room, but it is worth knowing before you book if your group needs complete privacy for a business conversation.
